2026 FIFA World Cup Schedule in Malaysia Time (MYT)

The FIFA World Cup has always been a source of thrills from the very start in Uruguay in 1930, when the competition featured only 13 teams. Now, a football marathon of 48 teams has taken over the world. It is hard to find a country that is not a fan of the FIFA World Cups. Even the countries that have never competed in FIFA World Cups still have a significant fan following for the competition. The event takes place once every four years, and each edition provides us with a plethora of memories.

In the initial years, the tournament was mainly the battle of the South American countries; however, the European giants quickly gained dominance, and the competition has kept changing. So, expect the unexpected from the 2026 edition.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will adopt a new format with 48 teams split into 12 groups of 4. Each team will play 3 group stage games, thus the importance of consistency and having a deep squad is getting higher and higher.

The first and second-placed teams of each group will directly qualify for the round of 32, while the 8 best third-placed teams will also advance to the Round of 32 based on their overall standing among all the thrid placed teams. From the Round of 32 onwards, there will be a knockout phase (single-elimination games) until the final, meaning that every match will be decisive.

The knockout phase will start from late June and continue until the final on the 19th of July 2026. This expanded World Cup format leads to more matches with very high stakes and a greater variety of kick-off hours for fans watching from Malaysia.

Although Malaysia has yet to qualify for the FIFA World Cups, football is still very much the main sport of the Malaysians. The sport always has a vibrant fan base in the country, and a large number of Malaysians regularly attend matches at the local, regional and international levels.

During a few spells, Malaysia’s football team was able to achieve success in the local Southeast Asian football market. The national team is now after long, term goals for on, field development and international recognition. As part of a general game improvement policy, youth academies and top-tier league programs regularly receive upgrades.

For Malaysian football fans, the World Cup is both a source of joy and a learning opportunity, a moment to see the greatest football stars live on TV, learn high-level football tactics, and get ideas for the future development of local football. People will get the same feeling from the 2026 World Cup.

As stated above, the matches will be hosted across North America; fans in Malaysia should expect a combination of late-night and early-morning kick-offs. Most fixtures will fall between 3:00 AM and 10:00 AM MYT, depending on the venue time zone.

The opening match, played locally on 11 June 2026, will be shown in Malaysia on 12 June 2026 at 3:00 AM (MYT), in which one of the co-hosts, Mexico, will face the 2010 hosts, South Africa. The final for Malaysian fans will kick off on 20 July 2026 at 3:00 AM (MYT) in the United States.

With games held at 16 different host cities in 3 countries, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to become the most geographically spread-out event in World Cup history.

Most of the matches will be played in the USA (78), where New York/New Jersey, Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, Philadelphia, Seattle, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Kansas City will host the matches.
