The world got to know about the FIFA World Cups for the very first time in 1930 when Uruguay hosted the tournament with just 13 teams, and fast forward to nearly a century later, it has grown into the biggest sporting event on the planet. The world eagerly awaits the tournament every four years, and it never fails to deliver moments that live forever — iconic goals, legendary teams, and nights fans never forget. The Messi and Argentina magic is so vivid in our memories, and it seems it all happened yesterday.

From Pelé’s brilliance to Maradona’s magic, Germany’s dominance to Argentina’s emotional triumph in Qatar, the World Cup has always represented football at its absolute peak.

Here’s a look at the most recent FIFA World Cup winners:

Despite winning the last title about 24 years ago, Brazil remains the most successful team with 5 titles to its name, but with the expanded 2026 format, this World Cup feels more open than ever. More teams mean more surprises — and more chaos.

This edition of the FIFA World Cup is inclusive in many ways, and one such way is that it will be the first edition to feature a 48-team format. These teams are divided into 12 groups (Group A to Group L) of four teams each, with each nation playing three group-stage matches.

The top two teams from each group progress automatically to the next round, which will bethe  Round of 32. These 24 teams will be joined by the eight best third-placed teams based on their overall performance among all third-ranked teams.

From the round of 32 onwards, it will be sudden death all the way to the final on 19 July 2026. This means a team will have to win five knockout matches to be crowned champions.

Socceroos are a familiar face at the FIFA World Cup in recent years, and their switch to AFC has enabled them to consistently qualify and compete against the world’s best.

Australia’s best World Cup outings came in 2006 and 2022, when they managed to move out of the Group stage and reached the Round of 16. In Qatar, the Aussie showed grit, organisation, and a team capable of frustrating the best.

With the 48-team format in 2026, opportunity knocks once again. Getting out of the group is the baseline target — from there, belief can take us a long way.
