Originally a small tournament of only 13 teams, the FIFA World Cup was first held in Uruguay in 1930. Almost 100 years later, it is the biggest sporting event on the globe, attracting billions of viewers every four years.

World Cup history has been largely influenced by European countries. Italy’s early supremacy, Germany’s regularity and France’s recent star-studded squads, along with Spain’s memorable win in 2010, have placed Europe at the centre of the tournament’s heritage.

Western European Time (WET) is a significant time zone that covers parts of Western Europe and Africa. On days when Western European Summer Time (WEST, UTC+1) is observed, clocks are set an hour ahead in the summer.

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled from June to July, all the kick-off times on this page are given in WEST, although the schedule is generally referred to as WET for consistency.

This schedule applies directly if your local time matches cities such as London, Dublin, Lisbon, Casablanca, Reykjavik, or Freetown.

From the Round of 32 onwards, the tournament follows a straight knockout format, requiring five consecutive wins to lift the trophy.

For fans following Western European Time, group-stage matches are spread between late-night and early-morning kick-offs. As the tournament progresses, knockout matches shift toward more comfortable evening viewing slots.

The opening match will be played on 11 June 2026 at 8:00 PM (WEST), while the final takes place on 19 July 2026 at 8:00 PM (WEST).
