🏟️ How the New 48-Team World Cup Format Works

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is going to be a 48-team tournament for the first time. The countries are divided into twelve groups of four, and each team plays three matches in the group stage.

The first and second-placed teams in each group advance automatically to the knockout stage, where they are accompanied by the best eight third-placed teams. This is the introduction of a new Round of 32, which will mean more knockout matches than ever before.

From the Round of 32 onwards, the competition is a knockout throughout the final, which is scheduled to be held on 19 July 2026. If you have a bad match, then you’re off.

Australia, the Socceroos & the World Cup Test

Australia have been a frequent presence at the FIFA World Cup recently. The Socceroos have been able to qualify and challenge top teams, pretty much every time, since they switched to the AFC.

Australias best World Cup runs were in 2006 and 2022 when they got to the Round of 16. The team displayed heart, great organisation and being unafraid of the big stage, especially in 2022.

Another chance is being given with the 2026 expanded format. The minimum goal must be reaching the quarterfinals, which will be a historic first for the Socceroos if they achieve it.
